Step 1 - Verify the RTO on training.gov.au
Before you pay anyone, check that they are a current RTO authorised to deliver the specific unit of competency you need. Every nationally-recognised course has a unit code (e.g. CPCWHS1001 for the White Card). The national register - training.gov.au - lets you look up any RTO by name or code and confirm exactly which qualifications they are approved to deliver.
White Card (CPCWHS1001) - State Regulator Directories
In every Australian state or territory except Tasmania the White Card must be delivered face-to-face by an RTO approved by that state's WHS regulator. The directories below list currently-approved providers in each jurisdiction.
Rail (RIW / SARC / Fatigue / Medical)
Rail industry workers register through the national Rail Industry Worker (RIW) program. SARC and other rail competencies are delivered by RIW-recognised training partners listed on the RIW portal. Medicals must be performed by an ONRSR-recognised Authorised Health Professional.
Mining (Standard 11)
Mining inductions are delivered by RTOs against RII-package units. Queensland coal operations additionally require a Coal Board Medical (Form 11/CMS Medical) delivered by a Nominated Medical Adviser (NMA).
Heavy Vehicle Licences (LR / MR / HR / HC / MC)
Heavy vehicle licences are issued by each state or territory's driver-licensing authority. Training is typically delivered by an Accredited Heavy Vehicle Training Provider registered with that authority. The practical test must be conducted in person at an approved testing facility.
Before You Pay - Red Flags to Avoid
- "Instant" White Card online in NSW/VIC/QLD/WA/SA/ACT/NT. Not legal in those states - the card will not be recognised. Only Tasmania permits purely online delivery.
- Cannot be found on training.gov.au. If the provider or the unit isn't on the national register, it is not nationally recognised.
- Guaranteed pass / no real assessment. Nationally-recognised units require demonstrated competency. A "guaranteed pass" offer is a fraud indicator.
- No identity verification. Legitimate providers verify your identity (100-point check or equivalent) before issuing a Statement of Attainment.
- Overseas-only qualifications. Overseas courses are not recognised for Australian high-risk work. Always verify Australian unit codes.
